In a way I'd almost prefer for Republicans to take the "nuclear option" and simply declare that filibusters can be stopped with a simple majority. Although it would allow the Republicans to pass all kinds of illiberal and anti-competitive legislation it would also have the effect of limiting the power of the senate in absolute terms. As someone who doesn't like the anti-democratic nature of the senate (dividing legislative power disproportionately to smaller states) I would be a lot happier if that part of the government withered much like the upper house in the British system. I tend to believe that in the long run, people are capable of telling the difference between a bad idea and a good idea. I wouldn’t mind having the US churn through the bad ideas quicker if it got us around to the good ones sooner.
